For carers
A simple activity kit to keep ready for quiet afternoons
A small prepared kit removes the pressure of inventing an activity in the moment. Keep it visible, uncomplicated and easy to adapt.
What to include
- A few large-print puzzle pages at different levels.
- Thick pens or pencils that are comfortable to hold.
- A short set of conversation prompts.
- Familiar photographs, postcards or magazine pictures.
- A playlist of favourite music.
- A simple sorting or matching activity.
Organise for easy choices
Use one folder or shallow box. Separate pages into simple groups such as Words, Pictures and Conversation. Keep only a small selection on top and rotate it occasionally so the kit stays fresh without becoming overwhelming.
Use the same resource in different ways
A word list can become a reading exercise, a conversation starter or a category game. A photograph can prompt noticing, storytelling or choosing a favourite. Adapt the activity to the person’s energy and interest that day.
Keep the goal simple
The purpose is not to fill time perfectly. It is to create an accessible opportunity for enjoyment, focus or connection. Stop while the experience still feels positive.
