Technology made clearer

Making smartphones easier to read and use

The phone has not necessarily become “too complicated for you”. Small writing, crowded screens, quiet calls and accidental touches can make any device frustrating. A few careful changes may make it feel familiar again.

Change one setting at a time

Take a screenshot or write down the original setting first. Test each adjustment for a day. Changing everything at once can make the phone feel like a completely different device.

Make the writing larger

On iPhone, look in Settings → Display & Brightness → Text Size. More options appear under Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size. On many Android phones, look in Settings → Display → Display size and text, or search Settings for “font size”. Names vary by model and software version.

Improve contrast and button visibility

Accessibility settings may offer bold text, increased contrast, colour filters or reduced transparency. Try them individually. Very high contrast helps some people but feels harsh to others.

Simplify the home screen

Keep Phone, Messages, Camera and perhaps WhatsApp on the first screen. Move rarely used apps into a folder or another page. Do not delete unfamiliar apps until you know what they do.

Make calls easier to hear

Adjust call volume while a call is active, gently clean the speaker opening and try speakerphone in a quiet room. Hearing aids and phones may have connection options; an audiologist or device provider can give individual advice.

Use voice features carefully

Voice assistants can make calls, set reminders and dictate messages. Practise one command at a time, such as “Set a timer for ten minutes”. Review privacy and purchase settings before enabling voice purchasing.

Reduce accidental purchases and taps

Use a comfortable case with a secure grip and require authentication for purchases. Be cautious with pop-ups demanding immediate action, money or a security code. Stop and verify any worrying request independently.

Make video calls more comfortable

Holding a phone or tablet for a long conversation can become tiring. A stable adjustable stand can keep the screen at a comfortable height, leaving both hands free and reducing accidental touches. Place it on a firm table and make sure the device cannot slide before starting the call.

Write down the three actions used most

  1. How to answer and end a call.
  2. How to return to the home screen.
  3. How to contact one trusted person.

Keep the instructions beside the usual chair, using the names and symbols visible on that particular phone.

The phone should adapt to the person

There is no prize for using tiny text or a crowded screen. The best settings make everyday tasks comfortable and predictable.
