Conversation prompts that make time together feel natural

A good prompt opens a door. It does not test memory or demand a perfect answer.

Use questions with room to wander

Instead of asking for a precise date or name, invite an opinion, a sensory detail or a story. Follow whatever part of the answer brings interest—even if the conversation changes direction.

Ten gentle prompts to try

  1. What meal always feels comforting?
  2. Which season do you enjoy most?
  3. What music makes you want to sing along?
  4. What was a favourite way to spend a Sunday?
  5. Which flowers or plants do you like?
  6. What is something you learned to make?
  7. Which place would you enjoy visiting again?
  8. What small luxury always feels special?
  9. Who could always make you laugh?
  10. What advice has stayed with you?

Take the pressure off

Share your own answer first, use a photograph or object as a starting point, and allow quiet pauses. If a question does not land, simply choose another. Conversation is the activity; completing the list is not the goal.

Keep it respectful: Avoid correcting details or repeatedly asking “Do you remember?” A warm response matters more than perfect recall.
