How to choose enjoyable large-print activities for an older adult

The best activity is not necessarily the hardest one. It is the one that feels clear, interesting and comfortable enough to begin.

Start with the person, not the puzzle

Think about familiar interests: music, gardening, travel, sport, cooking, local places or family stories. A simple activity connected to a genuine interest often feels more inviting than a complicated generic puzzle.

Make readability the first test

Choose a comfortable level

An activity should offer interest without creating embarrassment. Begin with an easier page and move up only if the person wants more challenge. Offering two choices—rather than asking an open-ended question—can also make starting easier.

A useful question: “Would you prefer a word puzzle or a conversation page today?”

Let stopping be part of the activity

Five enjoyable minutes can be more valuable than finishing every question. There is no need to correct every answer, keep score or complete a whole page. The aim is a pleasant moment, whether the activity is enjoyed alone or together.
