Family visits
Seven simple activities for visiting an older parent
A visit does not need a full timetable. One easy activity can take away the pressure to keep a conversation going and give you something enjoyable to share.
1. Look at one photograph
Choose a familiar photo and ask what was happening, who took it or what happened just before or after that moment.
2. Complete a short word puzzle
Sit beside each other and find a few words together. Read the word list aloud if that makes the page easier to use.
3. Finish familiar pairs
Try simple pairs such as salt and pepper, knife and fork, or black and white. Add your own family favourites.
4. Plan an imaginary afternoon
Choose where you would go, what you would eat and what music you would play. There is no need for the plan to be practical.
5. Use a conversation card
Pick one gentle question and let the discussion wander. Skip any question that does not feel right.
6. Try a “this or that” choice
Tea or coffee? Beach or garden? Morning or evening? Simple choices can lead naturally into stories and preferences.
7. Keep a favourites folder
Save the activities, photos and questions that worked well so the next visit is easier to begin.
